This Saturday, we will gather in The Story Cave (Michael Somoroffs,Illumination I) around an imaginary fireside to read Shakespeare's A Winter's Tale. This child-friendly version of the classic play is deeply illustrated and beautifully presented by Marcia Williams in her book, Tales from Shakespeare. Learn about the Globe Theater, the rude 'groundlings', and how spending an extra penny could buy you a better seat in one of the covered galleries!

Back in the studio, children will make and embellish theatrical masks. Using feathers, felt, beads, and patterned papers, we will create not only fanciful disguises but also a cast of characters to rival those of Shakespeare himself!

This Saturday, we will hike to the Architecture Omi field to see a new work by Thomas Lail. Notes for the Future is a show of recent xerography paintings, works on paper and concrete sculptures. The exhibit expands this week with the addition of Untitled (Dome IV) made of concrete and steel. The piece is comprised of forty cast concrete triangles - the quantity needed to construct a Buckminster Fuller geodesic dome.Thomas Lail is Associate Professor of Fine Arts at Hudson Valley Community College, SUNY in Troy, NY. He lives and works in Kinderhook and Brooklyn, NY with artist, Tara Fracalossi and their son, Coltrane.

Back in the studio, children will look at self-portrait collages by children of Cambodia and Thailand. On her most recent project with the I AM: International Foundation, Sasha Sicurella worked in orphanages and care centers in Phnom Penh and Bangkok. We will watch a slideshow of these projects and see the colorful, abstract artworks created by the children. Then we will use geometric and organic cut-out shapes to make our own self-portraits.

This Saturday, we will visit one of the longest sculptures in The Fields. Robert Grosvenor's Untitled, 1968 is a bright yellow form made of painted aluminum over steel. Just how long is it? We will work together to find a way to measure the sculpture from end to end!

Back in the studio, we will learn about some of the world's most renowned chair designers: Charles & Ray Eames, Arne Jacobsen, Le Corbusier, and the Italian trio, Gatti, Paolini & Teodoro. Look at examples of their designs and see how chairs can be like sculptures. We will take an online tour of "Destination Modern Art", MOMA's kid-friendly virtual gallery experience that will help us learn more about the art of chairs. Children will then design their own chair models using a variety of materials including wood, felt, paper, glue, and drawing tools.

Halloween Fun in The Fields...

A record number of local families dressed up and ventured to Omi last Saturday to celebrate Halloween among the sculptures. Creative costumes, fresh-popped corn, camp-fire songs, and a shadow-puppet craft made the evening frightfully festive! Trick-or-treat bags brimmed with candy while children young and old took part in the evening's many activities.

GREAT COSTUMES!

Special thanks to all of our volunteers who helped make the   event a big success!

This Saturday we will gather around Robert Melee's, It Up sculpture to read a lively Halloween story.
Witch, Witch...Come to My Party by Arden Druce is an invitation to join bizarre characters in a most unusual fancy dress party. The author, with long experience as a children's librarian, created this interactive, round-and-round story. Children will revel in Pat Ludlow's exuberant, sensual and detailed illustrations.

Back in the studio, we will make spooky silhouettes using black paper and white, moon-like circles. Children will cut out Halloween or night time shapes on folded paper then open to reveal a symmetrical image.

Then, arrange a variety of images into a seemingly back-lit composition against the big moon background. Learn about symmetry and the difference between a silhouette and
a shadow...just in time for Halloween!

And be sure to come back from 4-6 PM for Trick or Treat in The Fields with more Halloween art making, stories and songs by the fire, and seasonal snacks! Scroll down for the details......

This Saturday, we will walk through the woods in the sculpture park in search of colorful leaves to use in our art project. Learn to identify the leaves of different tree species using a kid-friendly guide to trees of our region. Look for maple, oak, birch, ash, and more.
Jane Hammond, Fallen, 2007

Back in the studio we will look at artists that use leaves as themes or materials in their work. See a variety of examples including works by Andy Goldsworthy, Jane Hammond, Alex Katz, and Charwei Tsai. Then, we will use our own leaves to create a mixed media watercolor drawing. Children will trace a sampling of leaves then color with warm colors. After crumpling the paper several times, the drawing will be layered with cool shades of watercolor paint. Learn about warm and cool color families while making a festive fall artwork!

This Saturday, we will take a closer look at William Tucker's three sculptures,EveHero at Evening, and A Homage to Rodin in the Wheat Field. Born in Cairo in 1935, he and his family moved to England two years later, where he lived until he moved to the United States in 1978. Tucker is an internationally renowned artist who is known for his contemporary bronze sculptures.

Back in the studio, children will work with natural, air-dry clay. We will learn how making a clay sculpture is often the first step in creating and casting a bronze piece. Using hand-building techniques, we will squish, squeeze, pinch, and pull  the clay into human-like forms. Come get your hands messy while experimenting with this wonderful material!
