10/15 Kid's Art Workshop

Dear Parents and Young Artists,

This Saturday, we will take a close look at the new sculpture by Jenne Highstein. Flora, 2011, is a 12-foot tall sculpture made of hand hammered stainless steel. Many of his works encourage us to think about the shape of our own bodies and how we see things close-up vs. far away. This artist also pays careful attention to the natural and architectural environments that surround his sculptures. Highstein, born in Baltimore, Maryland in 1942, studied in London, New York, and Chicago and has created hundreds of large-scale works in his career that include castings, carvings, land art collaborations, and drawings.

Back in the studio we will make still life drawings using seasonal objects found in nature. Children will work together to make two different compositions, which we will then draw, exploring the ways our eyes and hands 'talk to each other' when making a drawing from life. Pumpkins, gourds, leaves, apples and other autumn harvest objects will be a part of our activity. Children can find or bring along their own fall item to add to the mix!
